Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a surgical technique performed for breast cancer with no clinical axillary node involvement (T1, 2 N0). It involves removal of the first few nodes draining lymph fluid from the breast and are the first to be affected if the cancer spreads to adjacent lymph glands in the armpit. It has been widely studied and is shown to give more accurate pathology with its ability to detect micrometastasis in axillary lymph nodes. It also carries the advantage of reducing the chance of lymphedema of the upper limb, shoulder stiffness or numbness.
