Breast surgery is commonly performed for diseases of the breast, which include confirmed cancer diagnosis, masses indeterminate for cancer after triple assessment (clinical, imaging and cytohistological assessment), benign lesions such as papilloma, phyllodes tumour, lesions with ADH (atypical ductal hyperplasia), fibroadenomas, infected breast mass or abscess.
A breast surgeon has the role of initiating investigations for patients with abnormal symptoms and signs in the breast, find out the possibility of cancer, recommend and perform the necessary surgery. Breast surgeon specialized in breast cancer care is called “surgical oncologist” and is equipped with the knowledge of comprehensive multidisciplinary care for breast cancer, usually works as a team with radiologist, pathologist, medical and radiation / clinical oncologists.
Breast screening programs are now conducted in many countries to enhance early detection of breast cancer and is shown to reduce breast cancer-related deaths. Mammogram every two years is the gold standard of screening for healthy women, even without family history of breast cancer.
