Breast conserving surgery is possible for early breast cancer and is decided on a number of factors including the size and location of the cancerous lump in relation to size of the breast. With incorporation of oncoplastic surgical techniques (reshaping skills after removal of cancerous lump), 20% of breast tissue can be removed with good preservation of breast shape and satisfactory cosmesis. Sometimes, the breast may look slightly smaller and the nipple may be a little higher or lower after operation. Breast conserving surgery coupled with breast irradiation gives the same outcome as total mastectomy in terms of local recurrence or distant metastasis.
