Dr Cheung graduated from University of Hong Kong in 1977 and received her surgical
training at the Department of Surgery, University of Hong Kong.
After qualifying as Surgeon from the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Glasgow, she received further specialized training
in Breast & Endocrine Surgery at the University of Michigan from 1985 to 1986.
She served as lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital from
1980 to 1990 and became Consultant Surgeon at Kwong Wah Hospital
in 1990. She was awarded Fellow of the Royal Australasian College
of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons in 1990.
During her years of service as academic surgeon
at Queen Mary Hospital and consultant surgeon at Kwong Wah Hospital,
she started a one-stop breast clinic, incorporating the use of
needle biopsy procedures and breast ultrasound into patient consultation.
In late eighties, she initiated breast conserving surgery for
early breast cancer patients and breast reconstruction for patients
after mastectomy in Hong Kong. In 1990, she set up the first
breast-screening program in Hong Kong at Kwong Wah Hospital using
low dose mammography, which remains the longest running breast
screening centre with auditing.
After entering into private practice, she
became Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. In 1999, Dr Cheung set up the first Breast Care Centre in private
hospital, bringing in the new technology of stereotactic breast
biopsy into Hong Kong. She started the first organized breast
screening program in private with quality assurance and auditing.
She also started breast care nurse training and incorporated
nursing support and cancer counseling to service to breast cancer
patients.
In 2001, with the help of international renowned
surgeons, Dr Cheung started the first sentinel node biopsy program
at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, providing improved care for patients with early breast cancer.
In 2003, with the support of medical and clinical
oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists, Dr Cheung
set up a Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Team, the first of its
kind in Hong Kong, which holds weekly multidisciplinary breast
conference at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, aiming to provide multimodality treatment plans for breast cancer
patients under their care.
She received the award of Outstanding Professional
Women in 1999 from the Hong Kong Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs
Association for her dedication and contribution in her career.
She was further elected as one of the ten Most Successful Women
2003 by local Jessica Magazine.
She founded the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation
in 2004, a charitable organization made up of patients, health
care professionals and their supporters, who share the same mission
towards bettering breast health and cancer care in Hong Kong.
In 2007, she established the Hong Kong Breast
Cancer Registry – the first-of-its-kind comprehensive cancer
specific registry capturing information on local breast cancer
in Hong Kong, to provide evidence for research and analysis into
improving breast cancer prevention and care.
Apart from her private practice at the Breast
and Endocrine Surgery Centre in Central, she is also Honorary
Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of
Hong Kong, Honorary Director of the Breast Care Centre of the
Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, trainer for Surgical Program for young doctors for the College of
Surgeons of Hong Kong.
She is involved in lecturing to local doctor
groups and the public, teaching medical students locally, and
is also active in international academic exchange and currently
serves as council member of the Breast Surgery International,
international group of breast surgeons. Her current academic
interest is in breast cancer screening and early detection, oncoplastic
breast cancer surgery and sentinel node biopsy for early breast
cancer.
In community service, Dr Cheung has been a
zontian since early nineties and is past president of Zonta Club
of Hong Kong. In appointed public service, she has served as
member of the Social Security Appeal Board, Supplementary Medical
Professionals Council, chairman of Optometrists Board and is
currently serving as member of the Consumer Council, Women’s
Commission and Council on Human Reproductive Technology.
