Thyroid nodule is a common clinical problem, and nodular thyroid disease is prevailing
in our population. Ultrasound is frequently employed to screen
for thyroid lesions and to complement other relevant investigations.
Fine needle aspiration cytology is frequently performed under
ultrasound guidance. Surgical treatment should be considered
for nodules suspicious of malignancy, symptomatic nodules, the
presence of objective pressure symptoms or progressive increased
in size with monitoring. Thyroid function blood tests including
free thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels should
be performed to exclude concomitant hyper or hypothyroidism.
